NUSADAILY.COM – JAKARTA – Walt Disney Co is “very pleased” with the unusual initial results of the release of “Mulan” through the Disney + platform and in theaters of several other countries that do not have this service.
“We are very excited about what we saw over the Labor Day weekend,” Chief Financial Officer, Christine McCarthy told the Citi 2020 Global Technology Conference reported by Reuters on Thursday.
“Mulan” is a film based on Disney classic animation with a production cost of 200 million US dollars. The film was designed to appeal to audiences in China. It became controversial because of the lead role’s support for the Hong Kong police.
In addition, some of these films were shot in the Xinjiang region, which is the scene of China’s crackdown on Uighurs and other Muslims. It has been criticized by several governments including the United States and Human Rights groups.
Disney originally planned to release the film “Mulan” worldwide in March. But canceled the plan because of the corona virus pandemic.
McCarthy said Disney finally decided to play “Mulan” online via Disney +.
“It was not an easy decision because there are so many factors he said at play here,” McCarthy said. (int1)
