NUSADAILY.COM -JAKARTA – Manchester United continued their move to the round of 16 of the Europa League despite only playing a goalless draw against Real Sociedad in the second leg of the round of 32 at Old Trafford Stadium, Manchester, England, Thursday local time (Friday WIB).
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side qualified for the round of 16 thanks to a 4-0 win they picked up in the first leg a week ago, UEFA’s official website notes.
Sociedad, who were trying to create a miracle four-goal margin, had a chance to preserve the chance when they were awarded a penalty in the 12th minute after Daniel James had dropped Andoni Gorosabel inside the restricted area.
Instead their captain, Mikel Oyarzabal, wasted the opportunity with a penalty that deflected off the left side of the net, leaving goalkeeper Dean Henderson reeling under the MU goalkeeper.
In the 22nd minute, MU had a chance to widen their aggregate margin when Anthony Martial broke away from the Sociedad defender’s control when receiving Alex Telles’ pass, but his shot was saved by goalkeeper Alex Remiro.
Two minutes later, Remiro made a risky move to leave his nest to close fred’s shot which was met by the Brazilian midfielder’s sontek kick but the ball hit the crossbar.
Axel Tuanzebe’s 64th-minute goal gave the visitors a 1-0 lead.
However, the goal was disallowed because the VAR and referee Larence Visser found Victor Lindelof fouling Jon Bautista in the process.
Until the final whistle sounded, both teams failed to break into each other’s net which meant MU progressed smoothly to the round of 16 with a 4–0 aggregate win over Sociedad. (sak)
