NUSADAILY.COM – JAKARTA – Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan has urged local residents to abstain from frequent travel to contain the recent spike in COVID-19 cases in the Indonesian capital.

Both isolation rooms as well as intensive care units (ICU) at Jakarta’s hospitals have reached full capacity, he said while reviewing the Tarakan Regional General Hospital in Central Jakarta on Monday.

“From this hospital, I would like to call on all residents to reduce the number of travels. Let us avoid the potential for the transmission (of COVID-19). Let us choose safety,” he added.

Those who travel frequently run a higher risk of contracting the coronavirus, particularly if they have comorbidities, which can potentially have a fatal impact and cause complications, he pointed out.

He also made an earnest request to Jakarta residents to get vaccinated soon so that they are better prepared and have immunity from COVID-19, he said.

“It is better for us to be ready to get vaccinated so we are more prepared to face it if we are exposed to the virus,” he remarked quoted from Antara.

Jakarta’s daily COVID-19 infections hit yet another record, with 9,271 cases reported last Saturday (June 26, 2021), the highest level seen during the week, which brought the total case count to 510,667.

The additional positive cases were detected as a result of polymerase chain rapid (PCR) tests conducted the day before, according to the Jakarta Provincial Health Office’s official website corona.Jakarta.go.id.

The PCR tests were conducted on 30,549 specimens obtained from 22,911 people. While 9,271 of the people tested positive for the virus, 13,640 others tested negative for COVID-19.

According to the health office, 14 percent of the 9,271 positive patients were children aged below 18 years. They comprised 993 children aged between 6 and 18 years and 332 children aged 5 years and below. Meanwhile, 7,218 of the positive patients were in the 19-59 age group and 728 were aged 60 years and above.(mic)
