NUSADAILY.COM -LONDON- The British government has ordered an additional 40 million doses of the French pharmaceutical company Valneva’s COVID-19 vaccine for 2022, bringing its total order to 100 million, Valneva’s party said Monday.
The UK is also likely to order another 90 million doses of the COVID vaccine between 2023 and 2025, the French pharmaceutical company said.
Valneva, which expects to report the results of clinical trials of the Phase I/II vaccine within three months, said it had started commercial production in Scotland.
Vaccine sites in Scotland are ready to supply as soon as they are proven safe, effective and have been approved by the UK’s health watchdog, the interim chairman of the government’s vaccine taskforce, Clive Dix, said in a statement.
“The more than 40 million doses obtained through today’s deal significantly strengthen our portfolio and give us flexibility in the future if we need to revaccinate any UK population,” Dix said.
The UK trade minister on Sunday (31/1) said he was confident the country’s vaccination programme was safe following a dispute with the EU over the supply of the COVID vaccine after receiving assurances from Brussels.
Valneva hopes its COVID vaccine can start use in the UK between July and September this year, Valvena’s chief executive was quoted as saying on Jan. (sak/ant)
