NUSADAILY.COM – SAO PAOLO – Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said on Saturday that lockdowns were used to prevent the Corona Virus from “killing” and “strangling” the country’s economy.

“Without salaries and jobs, people die,” he said, referring to restrictions imposed by several states and city governments. “Lockdown is killing,” he added, saying that some politicians were strangling the economy with imposed curfews.

The president’s remarks came as the Brazilian economy is expected to shrink 6.4 percent this year, due to being hit by a pandemic.

Bolsonaro, who announced he was infected with COVID-19 on July 7, met his supporters in his official residence, Alvorada Palace, in Brazil. The president wore a mask and kept a distance of several meters from his supporters.

Bolsonaro said he felt well despite being infected with the virus and praised his health thanks to hydroxychloroquine to fight COVID-19 even though there was no scientific evidence. “I am living proof (that the drug works),” he told supporters.

In addition, the right-wing president said he also took anti-parasitic drugs to fight the corona virus.

Brazil recorded 28,532 new cases of corona and 921 new deaths on Saturday, the health ministry said. The total cases in Brazil, the second most affected country in the world after the United States, has now risen to 2,074,860 while deaths have reached 78,772. (han)
