NUSADAILY.COM – JAKARTA – Remembering Ricky Yacobi, one of the legendary players of the Indonesian national team, died after suffering a heart attack while playing football on the Senayan field on Saturday morning (11/21/2020).

The death of Ricky Yacobi was confirmed directly by the Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Gatot S. Dewa Broto, via a WhatsApp chain message.

“Innalilahi wainnailahi rojiun, has passed away our friend and national player, Bang Ricki Yacobi at Mintoharjo Hospital. May the deceased die in a state of Husnul Khatimah. Al Fatihah,”

First Indonesian in the Japanese League

Ricky Yacobi is the first national footballer to play in the Japanese League or J-League. He had a career in the Japanese League with Matsushita Electric FC, the club which was the forerunner to the formation of Gamba Osaka.

Ricky Yacobi was recruited by Matsushita Electric FC in 1988, following a neat performance with Arseto Solo and the Indonesian national team at the 1986 Asian Games.

However, Ricky Yacobi’s career with Matsushita did not last long. Based on Tribunnews news, 19 July 2012, Ricky Yacobi was unable to adapt to the cold weather in Sakura Country.

He also only played four games with a score of one goal. Nevertheless, Ricky Yacobi is still known as a pioneer in invading Indonesian players to foreign leagues. The exports of Indonesian players abroad then got busy in the mid-1990s. (Ian)
