NUSADAILY.COM – JAKARTA – Speaker of the House of Representatives Puan Maharani stressed that the role of women is very important in accelerating health and economic recovery during the COVID-19 pandemic.

‘If women are given a bigger role, then this will speed up the process of global economic recovery and in one country.’ Womenomics’ or greater involvement of women can be an economic driver, either in normal times or crises,” Puan said in a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday.

It was said by Puan in the Prepatory Committee for The 13 Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament (13SWSP) which took place virtually, Monday (12/4) night.

She explained that during the pandemic, many women were affected and even lost their jobs, including in the informal sector or services such as tourism.

On the other hand, according to her, women are also supporters of health recovery because many women work in the vanguard as health workers.

“Therefore, I see issues related to ‘gender-responsive recovery’ and ‘women economic empowerment’ as the main issues in this forum,” she said.

Puan explained, in addition to the issue of economic empowerment, another issue raised is the increasing marginalization and violence for vulnerable groups including women and children during the pandemic.

Puan invited 13SWSP participants to find a solution to the problem. So the forum not only discussed the identification of women’s problems during the pandemic.
