NUSADAILY.COM-DEPOK – The number of diabetics in Indonesia go up every year. One solution to this type of food intake is to replace rice with sago rice.
Sago is the first choice because it has the lowest glycemic index. The Glycemic Index is a number that shows how quickly carbohydrates are converted into sugar in the blood. The higher the IG, the change in carbohydrates (starch) into sugar faster.
“If we eat rice from rice as much as 100 grams, in four hours the Glycemic Index is 80 to 90. Whereas if we eat sago as much as 100 grams, in four hours the Glycemic Index is 25 to 30,” said Eniya Listiani Dewi, Deputy BPPT for Agroindustry and Biotechnology Technology told BBC Indonesia.
The efficacy of sago rice to reduce blood sugar levels has been proven against mice in laboratory tests. Mice who have diabetes suffer pancreatic gland damage. While mice who also have diabetes, but are fed sago rice, the pancreas glands are intact and capable of producing insulin.
The sago rice test is then carried out on humans. Hardaning Pranamuda, as the Director of the BPPT Agroindustrial Technology Center, said that clinical trials were conducted with Gajah Mada University.
Subjects were volunteers who were at risk of developing diabetes with fasting blood glucose levels of 100-125 mg / dL and glucose levels of 2 hours 140-199 mg / dL.
The volunteers then ate sago rice every day. As for the free side dishes, except side dishes that contain carbohydrates such as noodles, cakes, crackers and so on.
Then every week their blood samples are taken to be analyzed for glucose levels, cholesterol levels, and triglycerides.
“It turned out that the sugar levels of the volunteers, after four weeks of consuming rice from sago rice, decreased,” said Hardaning.
Fasting blood glucose of 20 volunteers for four weeks decreased by 10 percent. While the cholesterol which was originally 212 mg / dL became 200mg / dL and the triglyceride which was originally 160 mg / dL became 131 mg / dL. Let’s start eating sago. (yos)
