Tokyo Stock Opened Higher

NUSADAILY.COM – TOKYO – Tokyo stocks opened higher on Thursday morning, as two U.S. Democratic candidates are projected to win a second-round Senate election in Georgia, which will help President-elect Joe Biden pursue his party’s policies, including additional stimulus.

At 9:15 a.m. local time, the benchmark Nikkei 225 index on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) jumped 391.88 points, or 1.45 percent, from Wednesday’s close (6/1/2021), to trade at 27,447.82 points. A day earlier the Nikkei 225 Index slumped 102.69 points, or 0.38 percent, to 27,055.94 points.

Meanwhile, the broader Topix Index of all major board stocks in the Tokyo market lifted 31.69 points, or 1.76 percent, to trade at 1,827.87 points. The Topix index added 4.96 points or 0.28 percent to 1,796.18 points at the end of trading Wednesday (1/6/2021).

Shares of companies associated with insurance, banks, as well as iron and steel were among the biggest gainers in the opening minutes after the morning trading bell. (sak/ant)
